Chef Loong is another of those snack/dim sum/siu loong pau joints and it’s pretty well known around SS2. Apparently Chef Loong himself actually left to start Shanghai 10 in Bangsar! I wonder where he’s gone now as Shanghai 10 sadly seems to have closed down

You should probably know by now Xiao Long Bao is one of my favourite things to eat, and this is another place to eat them! One of the better ones too. It’s quite a popular place and it’s reasonably priced and fairly convenient being placed in SS2.

There menu is decent with a good range of crunchy stuff, fried stuff and a few refreshing dishes and of course some desserts to finish off your gluttony. It’s pretty easy to find, opposite the open air mamak area (some call it umbrellas, we refer to it as Misai – our favourite gerai there).

The interior is pretty standard, aluminum tables and chairs etc..that’s not the reason I go though, of course I go for the Xiao Long Bao (RM6 for 4).

They have a new variety now too with wine, alcoholic Xiao Long Bao! Honestly speaking though it doesn’t taste much different from the original one – it’s 50 cents more at RM6.50 for 4.

Another fav is the Crispy Netting Prawn (RM4.20) – this is delicious!

The Avacado Katafi is similar, but I can’t say I’m so fond of it. But then it is more of a desert.

The cucumber dish is delightfully refreshing amongst the fried stuff.

The Char Siew Pau are not bad.

The Crispy Chee Cheong Fun is definitely worth a try!

The desserts are all worth trying, depending on what tickles your taste buds. It is a dessert house after all. Even though the food is labeled as snacks…don’t be deceived, the portions are good and it’s quite filling. It’s perfectly ok to go there for dinner. We give it a solid We Ate This 7/10!

*THIS RESTAURANT APPEARS TO HAVE CLOSED DOWN AS OF MAY 2008*

Xiao Long Bao is absolutely one of my favourite things to eat, it’s basically a dumpling filled will soup which explodes in your mouth (AKA Shanghai Soup Dumplings)! Most often served with Ginger and Vinegar we’ve been to most restaurants serving this dish.

You can read more about it on Wikipedia here: Xiao Long Bao.

Most restaurants serving these dumplings also serve other kinds of Dim Sum and the type of noodles known as La Mien or ‘Pulled Noodles‘.

Shanghai 10 is located conveniently in Bangsar, you can park at the multi-storey carpark (Jolly Green Giant) and walk across. It’s nearby the new Bangsar Village 2 and next to Public Bank.

It has a reasonable range of stuff with some fried rice, noodles (La Mien) and dim sum type dishes.

The main reason to go is of course the Xiao Long Bao! It’s delicious, very juicy, good soup flavour without being overpowering, thin and delicate skin (but doesn’t break too easily like some)..very nice taste of the pork inside and generally worth whacking 2 baskets at every visit!

The rest of the stuff is great too, favourites would be the crispy ginger prawn in netting – not oily and the ginger doesn’t take over the prawn – a definite fav!

They also have the regulars like Salad Prawn and Wor Tip (Pan fried dumplings) – both are good. The place is generally very consistent.

They also have some other staples like fried rice (try the floss rice – it’s good!).

And the La Mien of course – I can’t we are big fans of La Mien – but amongst the places we’ve tried this is one of the better ones.

A few types of vege like Siu Bak Choi (Butter head Lettuce) and Dau Miu (Sweet Pea Sprout).

A nice range of deserts too with the regular shaved ice ‘Loh’ variety and some variations.

The egg tarts are worth a try too.

Out of all the restaurants Shanghai 10 pretty much tops the list for taste, texture consistency and the freshness and quality of the foods used – definitely our favourite Xiao Long Bao here.

I’ve very little to improve, the place is nice and kept clean, the service has been good all the way so far, the price is reasonable and the quality seems consistent (we’ve been there a lot of times). One of our top places to eat we give it a We Ate This 9/10!

(Yes yes we’ve tried Crystal Jade, Dragon-I, Chef Loong and others..)

Dim Sum is something like Chinese finger food or tapas, small portions of a variety of dishes based around pork and prawns with many varieties of dumplings.

Generally steamed in bamboo containers with some deep fried variants.

A Little Dim Sum Place used to be in Hartamas some time back, I used to go there for lunch when I was working in Plaza Mon’t Kiara. Conveniently for me it’s now moved to SS2, the heart of food for Petaling Jaya.

It’s a slightly upper scale version of Dim Sum than those normal street side establishments, although for the quality of the food it’s still very reasonably priced.

One of my favourite all time Dim Sum dishes is Wu Kok or Deep fried yam puffs.

Another one of their well known dishes is the Bacon Roll – delicious real bacon…hmm.

The Char Siew Bao (Honey BBQ Pork Buns) are delicious too, the outside not too thick, light and fluffy and overflowing with juicy meaty bits.

The Chee Cheong Fun (Steamed Rice Noodle with Shrimp) is also light and not too overwhelming.

Another firm favourite is Pai Kuat or Steamed Spareribs, I eat at least 2 plates of these at any Dim Sum establishment.

The final and definiative Dim Sum dish is Lor Mai Kai or Steamed Glutinous rice, absolutely delicious. Sometimes it’s rather rich and a bit too sticky – but this one is just nice and goes down a treat with some hot tea.

This varied meal for two came up to a reasonable RM39.96 including a pot of Pu Er tea and some mushroom lettuce rolls.

We give them a We Ate This 8/10.
