Tony Roma’s – Ribs, Seafood & Steak – Pavilion, KL

June 29, 2008 – 3:44 pm - 19,560 views

Now this is a place I was anticipating the launch of in KL, I didn’t get to try it for some time though even though there was one nearby in Cineleisure..

I was very disappointed due to the fact it was touted to be serving the excellent Pork Ribs that everyone in Singapore gets to enjoy.

When the finally opened in KL it was disclosed they had in fact decided to go non-pork..Anyway seen as though we were in Pavilion and there wasn’t much else we fancied I thought we should try out Tony Roma’s.

It’s a fairly standard setting for a western style restaurant, plenty of wood, quite comfortable, has booths like Chili’s and TGIF.

Tony Roma's - Pavilion, KL

Wherever we eat we will surely have hot/buffalo wings to compare the standard, we love both Chili’s and those at TGIF even though they are slightly different. The wings here didn’t disappoint, even though they are served on such a huge plate (which makes the portion look smaller) the blue cheese sauce was really strong and tasty.

They are a little pricey though (RM17.90), as much as a ‘party’ portion at TGIF or a full pound at Chili’s.

The thing everyone has been raving about is the Onion Loaf, which once had in Singapore was thoroughly disappointing. We opted for the half loaf, and it was absolutely yummy!

I’ll definitely be going to Cineleisure to check this out and see if it’s as good, it’s pretty reasonably as well at RM12.90 for the half loaf. Very crunchy, tasty onion, not too much batter and goes perfectly with the sauce.

Next up we had one pasta dish, the Shrimp Pasta…which was HUGE! A little too large really, it was like the Italiannies portions labeled ‘To Share’.

It wasn’t just a lot of pasta too, there were a LOT of shrimps for a dish of this price (RM29.90).

And of course I went there try the ribs, I went for a half-rack as the whole rack was a bit too heavy on the pocket..there are 4 sauces to choose from, you can have the ribs basted in them if you request it when you order – or you can just use them as plain dipping sauces.

Tony Roma's - Pavilion, KL - Rib Sauce

In basic terms there is Tony Roma’s original, a smoky one, a spicy one and a sweet one. I had the ribs with the original sauce. The portion looked a little small for the price (RM48.90) but the ribs were excellent quality. I have to say I’m not sure if I’d pay so much again.

The side dishes were superb though, I went for a jacket potato and ranch style beans. Really nice!

Overall I’d say Tony Roma’s is a little pricey but the food was very good. We’d give it a satisfying We Ate This 7/10 – it’d make 8 if it were a little more reasonably priced.

  4. Yeah, onion loaf FTW!! Awesome stuff but still can’t compare to chilli’s awesome blossom though :P

Yeah I agree with Kevin and John, the pork ribs in Singapore at Tony Roma’s were da bomb!

  5. WTF, no pork ribs!!! It’s like a KFC without the chicken!

  6. they have good ribs, but quality of food not consistent tho. The one at Cineleisure was good, but the Sunway Pyramid one was dissapointing… the rib was so hard and tough!

  7. Well, I had tried this on the Sunway Pyramid’s branch… the ribs really tasted good.
Maybe I will try the pork ribs in Singapore as what Kevin’s comment! ;)

  8. The TR’s in Singapore still rocks compared to the one here… They don’t even serve the lovely bread and butter as an appetizer. And the price! :-x

  9. For those who’ve tried TR’s overseas (S’pore, Bangkok, Jakarta)…Haha, I bet they won’t visit twice in Msia. 1st, it’s so overly priced! 2nd, the ‘star’ (babi ribs!) is missing….3rd, even with the same dishes, the serving is definitely smaller.

  11. The ones in Singapore are getting less and less tasty. When I first tried it 10 years ago, it was like soft char siew on a stick – fragrant, heavenly pork meat drenched in great smoky, sweet sauce. Now it’s not as char siu-ish, the sauce is not as smoky. Maybe it’s the pork they use, or maybe not as much molasses or whatever they use in the sauce. Sigh.

BTW, Checkers in D’sara Heights and Ribley’s in Hartamas serve a different type of ribs – the dry type with herbs instead of the moist Tony Roma’s type. It sucks.

  13. This is the first time i went to TR in Pavilion KL.

We was impressed by the service rather than the food… when we were in the restaurant its q busy that time, but the server was really patient to explain the menu and answer our questions, if i am not mistaken his name is stephen or steven i cant remember. While we were having our food even the restaurant is still busy he was concern abt our meal.. thts the thing i can get from TGI and mdm kwn.

The food is not as good as what we expect, the ribs portion is a bit too small for the price we paid. However the onion thing was really good.

So if we have the chance to go back to the restaurant i think bcos of the service.. hope you can improve your food before i pay my visit…

  14. The appetizer sampler was simply delicious (in Singapore).. is there any skillet cookies here? you guys didnt try it?? awwww….what a waste…

  15. Don’t waste your time going to Tony Romas in all the outlets in Malaysia as they don’t serve pork as this is the main why the majority go there. Once you have tried Tony Romas Bandung, you wil forbid yourself from going to the ones here in KL
