Shihlin Taiwan Street Snacks - Oyster Mee Sua & XXL Chicken - 1-Utama Old Wing

Shihlin Night Market is a famous market in Taipei, Taiwan - there are various foods there (mostly snack types of food) that are well known.

We don’t go to Old Wing much any more so it was only recently we decided to try this small cafe style shop in 1-Utama Old Wing (near the TGV cinema) selling Taiwanese street food, it always seems busy and we’ve heard it’s good (especially the oyster mee sua!) so we checked it out.

It’s a fairly small and simple place, pretty crowded most of the time so you may have to wait for a seat. You can also pack the food to go - the XXL Chicken is VERY popular.

They only serve two drinks, soya milk and mineral water - the soy is good quality V-Soy though (RM2) (my favourite brand!).

The Handmade Oyster Mee Sua (RM5.50) is just as good as we heard it was, it’s the quintessential comfort food. Smooth delicious wheat noodles in piping hot soup with 2 pieces of succulent oysters. The contrast between the fresh oysters and hot noodles makes the dish an addictive treat.

Chopsticks aren’t given by default as you are only supposed to eat it with a spoon if you want to follow the Taiwanese way.

The XXL chicken (RM5.50) was good, and a big portion (could’ve guessed that from the name eh?) I still think Uncle Bob is better though (cheaper at RM4.50 too), perhaps I wasn’t that hungry when I ate this though.

Does anyone else find it ironic having ’street snacks’ in a shopping mall? Anyway, it’s a decent place with a limited menu - but what they do, they do well! Definitely worth a bowl of Oyster Mee Sua and a slab of chicken. It could definitely be a little more spacious and comfortable tho, it’s a little pricey for the hawker style seating.

It doesn’t make you feel like hanging around. Maybe we can class it as street snack comforts with shopping mall prices?

It gets a tasty and satisfying We Ate This 6/10 - they should reduce the price though, or get out of the mall and cut the overhead (and more space!).

  3. Hmm, really something to look forward to when I do step into 1u again, the really looks quite alright…

  4. Shih Lin is nice. We love to eat it in Singapore too. XXL Chicken is great when you starve for some fried foods. The crepes is nice as well.

One package they have in Singapore is the XXL Chicken Rice Set. It consists of XXL Chicken, rice, Phi tan (the fermented egg) and beancurd.

  6. You’re right, Uncle Bob’s chicken is waaaay better. I didn’t quite like the mee sua….. but that’s just me, I felt it lacked oomph, even with the sambal that they provided. Being the typical Malaysian, I asked for chili padi or chili potong (for added oomph), but they don’t have it.

  10. and hmmph… a piece of XXL chicken is enough for 1 meal (im saying this as a student for the price), and looks like you should update the price…
but why the date is 13 march the price still rm5.50? i went there few days ago and its rm6.00 already.
yet this price is still good compare to others in the shopping mall, its really worth it!
and the news is that: ikano power centre at mutiara damansara is going to have another franchise!

  12. Simon Seow: Will have to try that next time.

Bernsy: Do give it a try and let us know what you think.

surfnux: Yah I think it started out in Singapore.

in: Yah Uncle Bob rocks! They don’t have a kitchen I think so no real condiments.

babe_kl: Yah pasar malam has many Uncle Bob knock-off now.

pinkpainter: The oyster was big when we tried!

cindy: Hmm didn’t try that either, looks interesting though.

ahvoo: Well when we went that was the price and it was just a few days before the post. Before that it was RM4.80.

gutsygal: Yeah loh of course original one better!
