Kluang Station Kopitiam - Beef Rendang and Hainanese Chicken Chop - Ikano Power Center

February 14, 2008 – 8:49 pm - 1,384 views

This is a chain so you can find the same food in any of the Kluang Station branches around, the one I visited for the purpose of this post was in Ikano Power Center on the second floor near Harvey Norman.

It’s a typical kopitiam kind of joint, there’s many around now serving roti bakar and strong coffee. I visited this one though to try the Hainanese Chicken Chop I’d heard about being good, the beef Rendang looked worth a try too.

The Hainanese Chicken…I have NO idea at all why they would call it Hainanese? It seems like English food to me, battered chicken served with baked beans, peas and mushroom and a side of crinkle cut chips. I’m sorry but WHICH part of that is Hainanese?!? Anyway that’s beside the point, it’s a very good combination and very enjoyable, I recommend it. It’s quite a large serving though (RM10.90).

This is the Beef Rendang served with white rice and a salted egg (RM8.90). It was very coconut-ish and the texture was very good, not too dry and not moist. The beef was fairly tender, a bit chewy in places but overall nice. The rice was of average quality and the salted egg made a good combination.

They have a normal array of drinks, this is Kopi Ais (RM2.80) and Warm Barley (RM2.20).

I also tried the Sirap Limau which was nice, not too sweet (RM2.30).

There is also a variety of side dishes like chicken wings, curry puff and fried chicken. I honestly don’t get why these Kopitiam joints are so popular, they are sprouting up everywhere.

I give it a pretty satisfying but not fantastically amazing We Ate This 6/10, it could do with being a little cheaper and the food a little better. Anywhere that has authentic Hainan chicken chop?

  2. I don’t know bout authentic Hainanese chicken chop but have you been to Yut Kee Restaurant at downtown KL? Just down the road from Maison. They have a nice variety of great food. Thinking bout it makes me wanna go back there again.

Interested to make a trip soon? Will buzz you or vice versa.

  3. … and i dun see any of the food you mentioned right here in Kluang… so i doubt the authenticity of the outlet itself! :P

  4. Yes, voices is right. Yut Kee serves authentic hainanese chicken chop.
BTW, its called hainanese chicken chop because……..back in the day during colonial times…..most housekeepers and especially cooks were hainanese. The brits were homesick for their food and so taught them how to make this dish. That’s why it sort of looks like english food. As for the name chicken chop….no idea how that name stuck.

  6. if i’m not mistaken, it’s called hainanese because of the sauce. it’s the hainanese-style of it.

  9. oh? I thought I left a msg before. Uncle Lim’s - at Ikano also. Friend mentioned their chicken chop is nicer (it also looks the same as Kluang Station’s - and also called “Hainanese”)

  10. v0ices: Yeah that seems to be the most mentioned place so far, will definitely have to check it out.

Mossie`Ol Chin: Haha yeah of course la!

    in: Hmm that’s interesting, thanks.

    She: Yah yah.

FeR: That was on my blog, always better if you comment here. I’ve had Uncle Lim’s Laksa and it was terrible, I didn’t know they had Chicken Chop.

  13. No it is definitely NOT authentic. no respectable Hainanese chicken chop would be served with crinkle cut chips! it should be chipped potatoes.
There’s one that does this somewhere in port klang town, can’t remember the name though. mail me if u are actually willing to drive to port klang for directions.
